What makes the hammer work?

  1. The first question to answer is “When does the hammer move?” Students should see that the hammer moves when you push or pull the input lever.
  2. The second question is: “Does the hammer move at any other time?”
  3. The third question is to help children to focus on directions of movement: “When I push the input in toward the nail, which direction does the hammer go? Which direction does the hammer go when I pull the input out, away from the nail? “
  4. The generalizations children should make are:
  • The hammer only moves when the input moves.
  • The hammer moves in the same direction as the input.
